Volunteers are the heartbeat of our festival

“My favourite part of the summer, hands down, is volunteering at GIFF! I love how Gimli transforms into a lakeside hub of cinema magic where conversations about films can be heard on every corner and in every cafe. As a volunteer, it’s so fun to be apart of that.”


We are looking for volunteers to join us for our 26th festival, taking place July 22–26, 2026 in Gimli!

As Manitoba’s premier film festival, GIFF is gearing up for another fantastic year and we’re looking for enthusiastic, community-minded volunteers to help bring the festival to life. Volunteer opportunities are available in:

  • Work with Sponsorship & Hospitality Coordinator & Special Events Coordinator

    Hospitality Roles are divided by Industry Sessions and Events

    • Industry Session Responsibilities

      • Welcoming Guests 

      • Setup - Moving Chairs and Preparing the stage 

    • Events include Receptions, Filmmaker Mingle, etc

      • Greeting patrons 

      • Checking passes and attendance 

      • Serving experience

      • Tidying up after receptions 

      • Strong communication between teammates

    • Hand out free drink tickets

    • Upstairs Johnson Hall catering staff

    • Check in

    • Co-creation of a positive, inclusive, and accessible environment

    • Communication with primary supervisor (specified on scheduling)

    • Adherence to volunteer dress code (t-shirt and name tag)

    • Adherence to confidentiality policy

    • Emphasis on customer service

    • Open-minded approach to the art presented

    • Patience and respect in situations where stress may arise

    • Continuous improvement mindset 

    • Discuss complaints or dissatisfaction discretely with supervisor especially when festival attendees are present

    • Sell tickets, passes, raffle, and merchandise

    • Box office tech (iPads, card readers)

    • Share information about the festival and films (Info hub)

    • Greeting patrons of the festival

    • Work with Venue Coordinator to create great experience

    • Greeting patrons

    • Helping to usher those who need it (In and out)

    • Keeping track of patrons and monitoring capacity

    • Handling ticket purchases

    • Using the scanner to admit patrons

    • Controlling lines and communicating who goes where (RUSH vs Ticket Holder)

    • Stand by and enjoy the films at your venue!

    • Rush Seating = patron needs to purchase a ticket, patron has a pass and has not pre-reserved a seat.

    Will start admitting Rush Seating 15 minutes before show begins

    Ticket holder seating = those who have purchased a ticket or pre-reserved a seat using their pass. (must be done by 5 p.m. on the day prior to screening)

    • Attention to detail

    • Kid-zone ambassador

      • Facilitate crafts and games

    • Help organize/set up merch in tent for opening

    • Interact with customers, sell merch using iPad and POS machine

    • Answer questions from patrons about the festival

    • Clean up tent after close

    • Approachable and friendly attitude

    • Ability to sell tickets to patrons

    • Understanding of the raffle prizes

    • Smart Choices 

    • Hospitality Roles are divided by Industry Sessions and Events

    • Approachable and friendly attitude

    • Able to help Not-for-profit organizations set up booths

      • Lifting tables, chairs, bins, etc

    • Ready to help and actively looking for ways to help

    • Head count

    • Greeter at bus stop

    • Pick up/drop off run over from unitarian

    • Check in

    • Set up support for presenters

    • Reset after presentation

All volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 12 hours during the festival. In return, you’ll receive:

  • A Festival Pass (Rush Line Access)

  • Access to the Volunteer Room with snacks, meals, and coffee provided

All new volunteers will be invited to attend a short Zoom meeting prior to acceptance.
