RBC $15,000 Emerging Filmmaker Pitch returns to GIFF with expanded support
Gimli, Manitoba, May 20, 2025 — Submissions are now open for the 14th annual RBC Emerging Filmmaker Pitch Competition, taking place Saturday, July 26 during the Gimli International Film Festival (GIFF).
Now offering a $15,000 production grant—up from $10,000 last year—the competition provides early-career filmmakers with the strategic funding and industry connections needed to make their first film.
Presented by RBC, in partnership with On Screen Manitoba and hosted by GIFF, the program includes expanded in-kind and mentorship support ranging from equipment rentals and studio access to training, industry mentorship and a premiere screening.
“We’re proud to support emerging filmmakers as they develop the skills and experience needed for lasting careers,” said Tracey Schofield, Regional Vice-President, Commercial Financial Services, RBC. “This competition reflects our commitment to investing in talent and supporting creative growth in a changing industry.”
On July 26, filmmakers will pitch their short film concepts live to a jury and public audience, with the winning project receiving production support from across Manitoba’s media production sector.
Last year’s winner, Coby Friesen, returns to GIFF this summer to premiere Cruising in Gomorrah, the project he pitched in 2024. “This competition gave me the space and support to tell my story,” said Friesen. “It wasn’t just about funding. It was a push to take myself seriously as a filmmaker and deliver something real.”
“The Pitch Competition is one of GIFF’s longest-running and most impactful programs because it creates real opportunity,” said Teya Zuzek, Executive Director, Gimli International Film Festival. “It supports creative expression and gives emerging filmmakers a platform to be seen and supported.”
Applications open May 20. The deadline to apply is June 16. For full details and eligibility, visit: gimlifilm.com/rbc-emerging-artist
